The National Museum of the United States Marine Corps recently added a Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless to their collection of aircraft. This Dauntless was recovered from the bottom of Lake Michigan, where it sunk after a carrier qualification incident aboard the USS Wolverine in 1943. The restoration was carried out by the National Marine Corps Museum’s restoration team, along with Century Aviation. This is a great addition to an already world class museum. The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the most famous dive bombers used by the US Navy, earning his place in history by destroying four Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway. He served with distinction in the Coral Sea and the Salomon campaign, and continued to be used until the end of 1944 had slotted brakes that could be opened at the trailing edge of the wings to slow its rate of descent to descend almost vertically on the target. Douglas SBD (A-24 Banshee) Dauntless. The Dauntless first entered service in mid-1939 and distinguished itself in the Battle of Midway against Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu. Its capacity to absorb battle damage made it a rugged adversary and is one of aviation history's classic warplanes.
