Can’t say exactly, but I was using this approach when I was doing children’s picture books, more than 20 years ago. So it’s been a while!  If this is new to you, this is an Imprimatura-Bistre - the “first layer” of paint that I believe is critical if you want luminosity in your paintings… and this is the way I start all my daytime landscape paintings.   For the Imprimatura, I’m using Transparent Earth Red and Van Dyke Brown oil paint thinned with odorless mineral spirits. For the Bistre, I’ve rubbed out highlights with a simple paper towel. Linda Mann on Instagram: "The purpose of an underpainting is manifold. First, it gets me painting in a low-pressure way. There are no color variations, textures, subtle lighting effects, or even exact values to think about. All I have to do is cover the canvas with paint while retaining the drawing. It’s easy. It also takes away the stark white of the canvas, so it’ll be easier to judge color and value when the time comes. Lastly, it provides a consistent color under the top layers, harmonizing the finished painting. To begin, I mixed up 9 values of burnt sienna and lead white, and numbered them right on the palette. This makes it much easier to judge which value I want as I paint. Since I want this layer to dry quickly, I paint very thinly.
