M/1954 dress winter coat for a major general of the Soviet armed forces. This wool coat was introduced in 1954 for all general and marshal ranks and authorized to wear with gray shoulder boards in the 1959 regulations. Prior to this year, the shoulder boards for these coats were golden parade boards.

The Soviets were unique among many of the world's armies in that they were afforded special rights to alter their uniforms upon finishing their time in military service. Referred to as "peacocking" in the western world, this often meant adding a large amount of decoration to the uniform, as seen here on this highly-decorated VDV Sergeant who was a Veteran of the Soviet-Afghan War.
