Romanesque Art was the first art movement that could be classified as such in Western Europe following a period known as the Dark Ages. It started around 1000 A.D. and it continued until it was replaced by the art produced by the Gothic Artists in the 12th century. They gradually moved away from the influence of Byzantine art. What's remarkable is that this period in the history of art wasn't referred to as such #Artists #Romanesque #Romanesqueartists

Almost the only part of the Saint Lazarus cathedral in Autun that remains Romanesque is the tympanum and its immediate surroundings... but what a masterpiece it is! Sculpted by a master named Gislebertus (Gilbert) who, unusually enough, signed his work. Depicting The Last Judgment, it was sculpted at some point between roughly 1120 and 1140 and is known worldwide. The rest of the cathedral is Gothic. The archivolt shows a Zodiac and the Works of the Months, intertwined.
