"All Souls Day @ Camposanto, Pisa" by Pierre-Auguste Cot. 1872, oil on canvas. In the collection of The Appleton Museum, Ocala, FL. Depicts a widow and her two children at the grave of her husband. The same subject was painted by William-Adolphe Bouguereau in 1859. The woman in this painting is reminiscent of the one in Hugues Merle's "The Scarlet Letter" (1861) at The Baltimore (MD) Museum of Art.

The Artist: Pierre-Auguste Cot (1837–1883) came from Bédarieux in Languedoc, a southern province of France. He was a student of the history and portrait painter Léon Cogniet and two of the titans of Academic painting, Alexandre Cabanel and William Bouguereau
