The 2nd Grade students studied the artist Vincent Van Gogh and his artwork. We also read the book, Camille and the Sunflowers. The students were able to create a giant sunflower creating emphasis in their artwork. Then they were shown how to blend colors using oil pastels. The students had to choose a cool color for their background to make their sunflower "pop" in their piece of art.

With Halloween being one my students’ favorite times of year, I am always coming up with new Halloween art ideas. I have taught Halloween lessons including cute monsters, witches, haunted houses, spooky cats and pumpkins all while still teaching students new art vocabulary or introducing them to new art techniques. Here are some of my favorites.

4th grade students drew a background separated into five sections with images and words describing the Fall season. Students then outlined their drawings and used watercolors to paint in each section. Students also drew and painted a harvest pumpkin to complete their project.

I wanted a cool one-point perspective lesson that didn't involve the typical 'cityscape'. So Grade 6's did a farm landscape instead. I did a brief lesson on the basics of one-point perspective. The kids had to include a scarecrow up-close, anywhere in the foreground, and a barn, farmhouse, etc. in the far background.
