Walter P. Chrysler Jr. brought his massive art collection to Norfolk in 1971. Building a Legacy: Chrysler Collects for the Future, a new exhibition featuring "recent and promised gifts," opens Friday to honor that 50-year legacy.

The Chrysler Museum has 50 galleries, a growing collection of more than 30,000 objects, an interactive space for families, and the only glass studio of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region. Best of all, admission is free. Its nationally recognized collection includes paintings, sculpture, glass, photography, and decorative arts. Visit to the Walter P. Chrysler Museum on January 5, 2011. In 1953, Virgil Exner designed the unique Thomas Special, built by Ghia for C.B. Thomas, Chrysler's president of the export division. I photographed that car last July at the Meadow Brook RM auction, where it was the top seller, at $858,000. Later, Ghia produced 18 Chrysler Specials to almost the same design, six for Chrysler and twelve for Ghia. This is one of the Chrysler cars.
