Calabash tree

Calabash tree (crescentia cujete) is a small evergreen tree producing a toxic spherical fruit that grows up to 30cm in diameter. The fruit is not harmful when eaten in small amounts, but larger amounts can cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction. The flowers bloom in the Spring and are yellow green in colour with red and purple veins. The leaves are elongated and pinnate and are up to 15cm long. It likes full sunlight and well-drained clay or loam soils and grows to 9m tall.
