a white tree in the middle of a garden

Betula utilis var. Jacquemontii is a vigorous deciduous tree but can be kept under control. It has an amazing white trunk which is silky-smooth to the touch. It is capable of reaching 12m in height but 4-8m in spread in 20-50 years. As with all birches, it casts a dappled shade. It would probably be better not to have it growing out of a block of topiary - a single-stemmed specimen would be better for this purpose.
