In the early fifties, BMW had a reputation as a leading sports car manufacturer (thanks largely to the pre-War 328), and a newly developed V8 engine – but no sports car in which to put it. But then, a design proposal was sent to Bavaria that would prove influential to the company’s bloodline…

Despite acclaim at the 1955 Frankfurt Auto Show, the BMW 507's US debut was disappointing due to its $9,000 price, double the cost of competitors. Production began in 1956, with interior improvements, but the high price limited sales. Owners included Elvis Presley and John Surtees. Despite its exclusivity, only 253 units were sold, leading to production cessation in December 1959.
