This suburban kitchen dates from the late 1940s. The area is small and compact with gas and electrical appliances, a free-standing cupboard and a pantry. The electric cooker is a 1935 model and was rented from York City Electricity Department. It was quite common to rent larger domestic appliances, as they were expensive to buy. The 30s and 40s were eclectic times for design because you have Victorian holdouts like fine hand crafted laces coupled with newer mass manufacturing methods using ceramic, plastics, etc. You're left with an eerie mix of rich woods and pops of manufactured looking plastic-y colors.
