Lyles Station is one of the earliest black settlements in Indiana. Founded by a freed slave named Joshua Lyles in 1849, Lyles Station boomed with free black families from 1880 to 1912. The 1,200 acres of land were purchased with funds earned by Lyles from his former slave master. Lyles invited free slave families to live in his new settlement. He ensured transportation by giving five acres to the railroad on the condition that they would transport goods for farmers.
