o gain full membership of the Hand-Knitters' Guild of Strasbourg, journeymen knitters had to produce masterpieces including a cap, a woollen jacket, a pair of gloves with fingers, and a wallhanging patterned with flowers, like this one. This carpet or hanging is of multi-coloured stocking stitch made on needles, or possibly a peg frame. We do not know who made it. Pair of doll's stockingsThese stockings were made for a doll, known as Lady Clapham, that is thought to have belonged to the Cockerell family, descendants of the diarist Samuel Pepys (1633-1703). The daughter of Pepys's nephew John Jackson (the son of his sister Pauline) married a Cockerell, who had a family home in Clapham, south London.

Her pieces of work are attached to twelve glazed cotton pages. Most of the samples are of fine lace knitting but there are some pieces of solid wool knitting, of undyed Shetland wool and of coloured knitting.
