Le dôme du Rocher (VIIe siecle) est le premier monument qui se voulut une création esthétique majeure de l'Islam. Il abrite le « Rocher de la fondation », endroit où Mahomet serait arrivé depuis La Mecque et serait ensuite monté au paradis.On retrouve les influences byzantine et perse sassanide qui sont les deux grandes sources d'inspiration de l'art islamique.
