Fragment

Fragment 15-16C This fragment is one of many hundreds of printed cotton fabrics from Gujarat which have been recovered from several sites in Egypt. This one (like the others in the V's collection) reputedly came from Fostat, the former capital of Egypt, which has given its name to the whole group, which are often referred to as 'Fostat fragments'. Such textiles formed part of an extensive Indian trade with the Arab world conducted through the ports of Western India.

Coptic icon portraying a vision of Saint Basil, with Saint Mercurius killing the Pagan Roman Emperor Julian. Great-martyr Mercurius (224–250) was a Christian saint & martyr. Born Philopater in the city of Eskentos in Cappadocia, Eastern Asia Minor, his original name means "lover of the Father". Saint Mercurius is also known by the name Abu-Seifein, which in Arabic means, "the holder [literally, owns/possess] of two swords", referring to a second sword given to him by Archangel Michael.
