Dr Albert Hofmann was the first person to synthesize, ingest, & learn of the psychedelic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide. Sandoz Laboratories introduced LSD in 1947 as a drug for various psychiatric uses. Was it covert drug testing in the 1951 "Cursed Bread" in Pont-Saint-Esprit, France -- or accidental ergot poisoning? Sandoz, which was close to Pont-Saint-Esprit, is reported to have said, "The Pont-Saint-Esprit 'secret' is that it wasn't the bread at all... It wasn't grain ergot."
