"Tuning in" vocabulary! Before presenting a text to the class, I scan for challenging words. In Hiroshima I anticipate that the words “civilian,” “atomic,” “radiation” and “headquarters” will be tricky for my students. I teach these vocabulary words in small groups before reading the full text with the class. When we read aloud, students use their right hands to cup their ears to signal that they are “tuning into the word,” a small gesture that increases reading engagement and allows a…

In 1979, Nam Le's family left Vietnam for Australia, an experience that inspires the first and last stories in The Boat. In between, however, Le's imagination lays claim to the world. The Boat takes us from a tourist in Tehran to a teenage hit man in Colombia; from an ageing New York artist to a boy coming of age in a small Victorian fishing town; from the city of Hiroshima just before the bomb is dropped to the haunting waste of the South China Sea in the wake of another war.

Sacrée mamie (une) - Manga série

Manga très attachant, basé sur une histoire vraie. Un garçon va aller vivre avec sa grand-mère, très pauvre mais très débrouillarde. Une sorte de Petit Nicolas japonais !

Hiroshima Jesuit Church. All the early Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries were killed, every known Christian was martyred. But seven generations later, when missionaries were able to return to Japan, they found over 60,000 Catholics hidden in the mountains or in small fishing villages. They still sang the Ave Maria in Latin! They still practiced the daily recitation of the Rosary. They said to the new missionary, “Father, our hearts are the same as yours. We have kept the faith of our…

The H-Bomb was a bomb that gave the U.S. a small advantage in the nuclear arms race against the Soviet Union. The H- bomb was developed by the U.S. in the 1950s. These nuclear bombs are thousands of times more powerful than a regular bomb. When the U.S. dropped these nuclear bombs they didn't know the long term effects that would happen. Some of these things were cancer from the radiation and birth defects.

Voici une photo du bombardement de Nagasaki . Ceci est très important car il est fondamentalement l'idée principale du livre. Si il n'y avait pas le bombardement de Nagasaki il n'y aurait pas un livre.
