Devil's Island. Here is a photo of the hell that Alfred Dreyfus was deported to on January 5, 1895 when he was sentenced to a life in prison for treason by a secret and a closed trial. The penal colony of Cayenne was a prison of the 19th century and 20th century. It opened in 1852 and was notorious for being used as internal exile of French political prisoners during that period. Dreyfus was one of the many prisoners imprisoned there during his trial.
