Know what’s worse than being stuck in a dungeon? Being stuck in a dungeon ALONE. Roy Trubshaw, a programmer at the University of Essex, solved that problem in 1978 when he created M.U.D. (Multi-user Dungeon), the very first virtual world. The original game was little more than a series of interconnected rooms users could move about and chat, but Trubshaw quickly expanded the experience, making it way more dungeon-y. So next time you lose an afternoon to WoW, tip your cap to old Roy Trubshaw.
