I spent some time trying to select the right images for this post. I found the top one particularly appropriate; if there’s any artist that I associate with magic coming to life from the pages of a book, it’s French comics artist, illustrator and movie concept artist Jean Giraud, more commonly known by his pen name, Moebius. I was saddened to learn that Giraud died today, March 10, 2012, at the age of 73.
NICK TYRER MOBIUS STRIP A Mobius strip is a surface with only one side, with only one boundary component. It has the mathematical property of being non-orientable. Completed. MDF Layers. About 250mm Diameter. Any inaccuracies in the shape is down to my filing. This was produced using a laser cutter, obviously a 5-axis CNC would have been much useful, but i don’t have access to one. Still undecided wether i will varnish it.
Mobius Nautilus is a 3D printed sculpture by Joaquin Baldwin. A compound mobius strip created out of 36 interlocking mobius strips. All segments are thin mobius strips, and they weave and interlock perfectly through the spaces left between them. Highly complex, and a headache to look at, yet it possesses an inherent mathematical simplicity and beauty.
