1973- After being turned down by mainstream presses, Rita Mae Brown publishes her semi-autobiographical lesbian novel Rubyfruit Jungle through the small feminist press Daughters Inc. It sells an astonishing 70,000 copies mostly through word of mouth. Four years later, Bantam Books will buy the rights to it for 250,000 dollars, allowing Brown the opportunity to write full time.
