Not everybody in the Viking era was a Viking The word “Viking” is used above all in Nordic history, but also in British and Irish descriptions of history. The Vikings were not an ethnic or cultural group. We do not know what the word meant during the Viking era. Sometimes it is used to describe action: to be “in Viking” means to be out in battle. In other contexts it seems to be the name of a person. People during the Viking era were not always “vikings” out on expeditions.
