A BELLA COOLA POLYCHROMED WOOD MASK composed of carved wood, hide and pigments, depicting a hawk; the back secured with a wooden "bite." Height 11 in.
This dance mask dating from about 1860 has unusual red eyes, with peepholes beside each pupil rather than in the centre of them, lending a blank or neutral expression to the face. Red cedar bark and eagle down are still attached. Collected on Haida Gwaii by Israel W. Powell in 1879. CMC VII-B-4 (S92-4161)

Native American shaman mask Inuit people, Alaska 13 inches, wood Images of some early masks collected in the Alaska area suggest that the interesting half-moon shape surrounding the face actually represents the jaws of an animal. Probably made out of driftwood, it is light weight and well scared with worm holes. The dark drawing was burned on, not painted.
