En 1758, Louis XV envisage la construction d’un nouveau petit château au milieu des jardins qu’il a développés et embellis depuis une petite dizaine d’année. Il commande à Ange-Jacques Gabriel, son Premier architecte, un pavillon de taille suffisamment conséquente pour y habiter et y loger une partie de sa suite. Gabriel signe ici un véritable manifeste de l’architecture néo-classique, exemple parfait de la mode « à la grecque » qui se répandait alors en Europe.

As we celebrate the bicentenary of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, Gavin Stamp considers the remarkable way in which he adapted principles of Greek architecture to the development of his native city of Glasgow.
