Le kouign-amann ou kouign amann sans trait d'union (prononciation : [kwiɲa'mɑ̃nː], pluriel breton kouignoù-amann) est un gâteau, spécialité régionale de Douarnenez en Bretagne. En breton, kouign signifie « gâteau » ou « brioche » et amann, « beurre ». Il aurait été inventé par hasard vers 1860 par un boulanger douarneniste, Yves-René Scordia.

I ate my first kouign amann from the palm of my hand at a farmers market in Oakland almost two years ago, and I will never in all my life forget the taste of those first buttery, caramelized, incredibly flakey morsels.
