Joseph Bruce Ismay | White Star Line | Ismay and Pirrie were determined to beat their competitors latest ships and decided that high speed, while desirable, was not the essential element in capturing the vital immigrant trade. They decided to build the largest, most luxurious ships to maximize steerage capacity and woo the wealthy and the prosperous middle class. Ismay was rescued from the Titanic in Collapsible C.
J Bruce Ismay, chairman and managing director of the White Star Line, The myths surrounding Ismay are many but almost all centre on allegations of his cowardice in escaping the sinking ship whilst fellow passengers, notably women and children, were left to fend for themselves. In reality Ismay helped with loading and lowering several lifeboats and acquitted himself better than many of the crew and passengers.
Founder of the White Star Line,Thomas Henry Ismay ca, late 19th century (7 January 1837 – 23 November 1899) was the founder of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, more commonly known as the White Star Line. His son was Joseph Bruce Ismay who travelled on (and survived) the maiden voyage of his company's ocean liner, the RMS Titanic in 1912.
