The book begins in France during World War I in a small village occupied by the Germans. The reader learns of a portrait painted by Edouard Lefevre of his wife Sophie. The painting is calledThe Girl You Left Behind. This portrait becomes the focus of the story of two women, Sophie from France during the early 1900's and Liv Halston from present day England. Ownership of the painting causes both women to look at what is most dear to them and to try to safeguard those things as all costs.
