Head coach Tony Hand adamant Britain will learn from Kazakhstan defeat | Team GB. Hand’s troops were bidding to reach the Winter Games for the first time since St Moritz 1948 in Riga after winning the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in Japan back in November. However, as the lowest ranked side in a four-team group with hosts Latvia, France and Kazakhstan and only the winner reaching Sochi 2014, Hand knew the size of the task he asked the team to do.
The Winter Olympic Games occur once every four years. The first celebration of the Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. The original sports were alpine and cross-country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping and speed skating. The Games were held every four years from 1924 until 1936, after which they were interrupted by World War II. They resumed in 1948.
