The École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr (ESM, literally the "Special Military School of Saint-Cyr") is the foremost French military academy. It is often referred to as Saint-Cyr (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ siʁ]). Its motto is "Ils s'instruisent pour vaincre": literally "They study to vanquish" or "Training for victory". "La Seine à Paris", 1888. Albert Dubois-Pillet (1846-1890) was a French painter and army officer. He graduated from the École Impériale Militaire at Saint-Cyr in 1867, and fought in the Franco-Prussian War, during which he was taken prisoner by the Germans. After the war, he started painting, and was instrumental in establishing the Société des Artistes Indépendants and Neo-Impressionism.
