Figures dominantes de l’art contemporain, Cindy Sherman et David Salle sont également des icônes de la « Pictures generation », mouvement appropriatif influent du milieu des années 1970 au début des années 1980 à New York. Arrivés sur la scène artistique au cours de cet âge d’or des média, ils ont tous deux trouvé l’inspiration dans l’imagerie existante, comme nombre de leurs contemporains, pour élaborer des œuvres d’une profondeur et d’une richesse remarquables.

Cindy Sherman: Bus Riders is a series of fifteen black and white photographs Sherman produced shortly after graduating at University, where she studied art (1972-6). The characters  in Bus Riders were based on people she had observed on the bus. One of them is male; three are androgynous in appearance; five of them are black. While male characters also appear in Untitled A-D and Murder Mystery People (as well as in such later series Sherman has not portrayed black characters in any other…
