Le canut et les gones, rue de Belfort, Croix-Rousse.
Traboules (passageways) were first built in Lyon in the 4th century. Lacking water, the inhabitants moved to the banks of the Saône.The traboules allowed the canuts (silk workers) to get quickly from workshops to the textile merchants at the foot of the hill. The traboules are located primarily in the 'old city' (5th arrondissement). They are often credited with helping prevent the Nazis from taking complete control of Lyon. [Parsed from Wikipedia]
