Corset made in France in 1580-1600 Eleanor of Toledo had a metal corset which kept her upright in her last days when she had swiftly declining health. Most research points to metal cage-like corsets being used as medical devices and not by the average woman for everyday wear. Ah, once again the Victorians warped an aspect of history. Picture features in "Corsets and Crinolines", which is a good read for folks interested in historical corsets (along with Waisted Efforts).
