Vivandière (Cantinière).  Women attached to military regiments as sutlers or canteen keepers, although they also performed nursing duties and sometimes fought bravely alongside the men. Vivandières (French term) served in the French army up until the beginning of WWI, but the custom (and the name) spread to many other armies. They were brave and respected by their regiments.
