USS Galena (1862) early ironclad experimental ship whose light armor was judged insufficient. Photograph looking forward along the ship's port side shortly after her 15 May 1862 action with Confederate batteries at Drewry's Bluff on the James River Virginia. Note the battle damage and a stucked cannonball above the surface.
Picket Encampment at Blackburn’s Ford.
Picket Station, Bull Run, Federal Encampment at Blackburn’s Ford on Bull Run, July 4, 1862. Photo taken by Timothy H. O’Sullivan. The tent in the picture was known as a dog tent (as only dogs could sleep in it) and it was made of two "shelter halves" which would be carried by two soldiers and then buttoned together and supported by sticks when it came time to bed down for the night. If it was a nice night, however, many soldiers just slept out in the open.
