Philippine Birdwing Butterflies

Birdwing butterfly species from family Papilionidae found in the Philippines. Birdwings are papilionid butterflies native to the Indian Subcontinent, mainland and archipelagic Southeast Asia and Australasia, and are usually regarded as belonging to three genera from subfamily Papilioninae, tribe Troidini: Ornithoptera, Trogonoptera, and Troides. Ornithoptera does not exist in the Philippines.

Trogonoptera brookiana is a butterfly from the Australasia / Indomalaya (Australia) ecozone. From the rainforests in the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Natuna, Sumatra, and various small islands west of Sumatra (Banyak, Simeulue, Batu and Mentawai), it is the national butterfly of Malaysia. Philippines has Trogonoptera brookiana brookiana (Wallace, 1855) found in Balabac Is., some 40 km away from Palawan.
