Madagascar - Eden Projects

Madagascar is more than just an island from an animated movie. It’s a nation with over 200,000 species of plants and animals that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. But more than 90% of Madagascar’s original forests have been destroyed, displacing entire animal species and taking away the Malagasy’s ability to farm and live on the land. Entire mangrove estuaries are gone, leaving the bare earth to wash away into the sea.
George, one of Eden's managers in Akalamboro, stands in a grove of mangroves planted closer to the mud flats and further from the canal. Because of their location, these mangroves have a stunted growth pattern, making them older than they look. Instead of being watered every day by the canal, these mangroves get watered a few times a month. Not to worry, though, this is a natural process and only demonstrates the uniqueness of Madagascar's natural environment. www.edenprojects.org

Michael Johansson, a graduate student at Stockholm University's Department of Physical Geography, spent the month of May conducting careful studies related to growth, survival, and health of the emerging forests at Eden's project sites in Madagascar. The data will now be summarized and enhanced with satellite imagery by our partners at Stockholm University. #EdenProjects www.edenprojects.org

"A Hope for the Future" This old mangrove stump shows what once was the norm on an island in the Mahajanga Estuary of Madagascar, and the trees in the back are an example of the natural regeneration that is occurring on the island because we are protecting the new forest. The saplings show us the promise of new growth. #EdenProjects http://www.edenprojects.org/hope_for_the_future

Dina, one of Eden's managers in Madagascar, uses GPS technology to mark the next survey plot on Island 1 in Mahajanga. A team of three counts out the number of plant species, both planted by Eden and naturally grown, and tracks general height and diameter. www.edenprojects.org
